Who I Am

I’m Lindsay Melka, founder of Empathic Counseling and Psychotherapy. A place for you to take down the walls and get real.

Why Counseling?

I know we can’t make the best decisions when we feel ashamed, self-critical or fearful. I know the best thing people can do for themselves is to reach out and get honest feedback from someone not in their “real life”.

Who I Love to Work With

I love working with clients who have struggled because I’ve been through it myself. I have a deep understanding of that it’s like to feel hopeless, inadequate, addicted, different, etc. because I’ve lived it. AND.. I have found my way through. I believe it is because of my personal experiences that I am able to connect with people on a very real and intimate level. For this I am incredibly grateful. Why? Because I absolutely love what I do and have discovered I’m really good at it.

p.s. That's Page. He is one of the loves of my life. I'd show you my Fiancé, but you would much rather look at this handsome guy!

Why Relationships?

I started to notice that many people seeking “coaching” and “guidance” for everyday problems had much more going on beneath the surface. Themes of self-doubt, shame, and disconnectedness became more apparent. People felt odd and not accepted for who they are. They felt alone and confused. They were constantly scanning the environment to see if they were “okay”. I began to identify key events and relationships contributing to all of this shame and self-criticism. Helping people access and acknowledge these underlying feelings was nothing short of transformative. With counseling people began building genuine connections with the people they cared about in their lives.

Ok, I guess you can see one. This is the other half!

How I Roll

To get a better idea of what my personal and business philosophies are, I’ve created a short list of values that I find to be fairly explanatory of how we work.

Embracing Imperfection: We have many things that make us unique. People don’t want to be around perfect people. People want to be around others with flaws. It's what makes us beautiful and human.
Laughter: A sense of humor is incredibly important when not trying to take life too seriously. It feels really good to laugh while learning about ourselves.
Compassion: Everyone is welcome. We all make mistakes. We all deserve to feel accepted and loved. Compassion nurtures the entire world.
Strength-based: You will not be criticized. Chances are you’ve done enough of this already. People tend to focus on the negatives. There are undiscovered strengths that you have probably been unaware of. There are strengths amongst the defeat. There is hope in the fuzziness of your stories. There is a conversation underneath.
Courage: It is courageous to show yourself to someone you just met. You can hand over your stuff and it will be taken good care of. We’ll rummage through it all together.
